Skudai state assemblywoman Marina Ibrahim has announced she will not be contesting her seat in the upcoming Johor Bahru state election, effectively stepping back from politics after four years in office.
Return to grassroots community engagement
According to local news outlet Bernama, Marina said the decision was reached following consultations with close associates and supporters.
The 38-year-old is a member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), the largest component party in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's ruling Pakatan Harapan coalition.
In a Facebook post on May 31, Marina said she was choosing to return to grassroots community engagement, a calling she had pursued long before entering politics.
"I have chosen to return to something very close to my heart, being out in the field, engaging with the community and continuing the social work that has been part of my life even before I entered politics."
Marina, who was elected to represent the Skudai constituency in the March 2022 Johor state election in a landslide victory, said she had entered politics with a straightforward goal of serving the people.
She expressed gratitude to voters, supporters and her team for standing by her through both successes and setbacks, Malay Mail reported.
"The end of one chapter does not mean the end of service," she said, adding that she would remain committed to contributing to society in whatever capacity she could.
She also extended an apology for any shortcomings during her tenure and confirmed she would continue carrying out her duties until a new representative is elected.
