The founder of the Surrey Hills Grocer cafe chain has been charged with 12 offences linked to alleged scams, misuse of company funds and forged business documents involving more than S$600,000 in amounts stated across court charge sheets.
Pang Gek Teng, 37, faces charges including cheating, attempted cheating, forgery and criminal breach of trust, with the alleged offences spanning from 2018 to 2025.
According to the charge sheets seen by Mothership, it outlines two broad sets of allegations.
One involves a woman who allegedly transferred more than S$400,000 over multiple occasions after being deceived through various false identities and fabricated stories.
The other relates to the alleged misuse of company funds and business-related transactions tied to Surrey Hills Holdings.
Woman allegedly transferred more than S$400,000
According to the charge sheets, Pang allegedly deceived a woman into transferring money on several occasions between 2018 and 2019.
She allegedly used the names “Desmond” and “Derrick” and claimed that money was needed for the safekeeping of funds.
Some of the allegations involved claims that the woman’s husband had been seen making enquiries about her bank account, and that her money was at risk of being frozen.
One charge stated that the woman transferred S$191,700 on Jan. 4, 2019, after allegedly being told the funds had to be moved for safekeeping.
Charges linked to Surrey Hills Holdings
Separate charge sheets state that Pang is accused of committing criminal breach of trust involving S$242,738.11 while acting as a key executive officer of Surrey Hills Holdings between April 2023 and February 2024.
Pang also faces an attempted cheating charge linked to alleged bulk hamper orders purportedly made by Orchard Turn Developments.
According to the charge sheets, she allegedly deceived a woman into believing that three bulk hamper orders worth S$813,541.60 had been placed with Surrey Hills Holdings, and induced her to generate invoices for the orders.
She is also accused of impersonating the chief executive officer of Orchard Turn Developments through WhatsApp messages in March 2024.
In a separate forgery charge, Pang allegedly amended an electronic invoice from AC Global Consulting and dishonestly induced a woman to transfer S$20,000 via bank transfer in January 2025.
No longer CEO of Surrey Hills Holdings
Pang had her employment terminated in March 2025 after she "admitted to certain wrongdoings and fraud committed against the company".
Pang founded Surrey Hills Grocer, an Australian-inspired grocer and cafe, and opened its first outlet at Joo Koon in December 2021.
The brand has since expanded to have several outlets, including at VivoCity and ION Orchard.
Pang’s case will be mentioned in court again on Jul. 10.
