SMRT asks, 'Have you seen this rat?', confirms 'no wider infestation' on East-West Line MRT train
The rat is believed to have entered the train from bushes near the Lakeside MRT station.
SMRT
SMRT has launched an investigation after a rat was recently seen scurrying around in an MRT train on the East-West line.
The incident was filmed on video and posted on Reddit on May 23.
SMRT investigates
In a Facebook post two days later, SMRT noted that the rat "caused quite a stir among commuters", and thanked the two men, who were commuters, for guiding it off the train.
Video footage showed the men chasing after the rat.
Based on its investigations, the operator said it appears the rat entered Lakeside station after emerging from nearby bushes and running through the fare gates.
In the moment captured on video, the train was heading towards Chinese Garden station.
SMRT previously explained that rats may occasionally enter trains through station platforms, track areas, undercarriage gaps, or gangways between train cars.
The post quipped that the rat "travelled without paying the correct fare".
Step up pest control
The operator also confirmed that there is "no wider infestation".
Nonetheless, it has acted to increase pest control efforts at SMRT stations and depots, including engaging nearby construction sites and the National Parks Board (NParks).
It also continued with the daily thorough cleaning and sanitisation of trains after service hours.
SMRT reminded all commuters to not eat or drink on trains, buses, or within stations, as food remnants can attract pests and other unwanted visitors.
