A Reddit user claiming to be a Malaysian man was left to shoulder a S$3,100 monthly condo rent, after his Singaporean fiancée allegedly cheated on him with his best man.

The post, which was shared on Reddit’s r/askSingapore forum on May 1, detailed how the 32-year-old claimed he was now struggling financially after the relationship and planned wedding fell apart.

Couple moved into Pasir Ris condo together

In the Reddit post, the man claimed he had previously been renting a master bedroom in Tampines with his then-fiancée, a 27-year-old Singaporean.

When it came time to renew the lease, he said he initially wanted to rent a more affordable two-room HDB flat.

However, he alleged that his fiancée preferred a “brand new condo” above Pasir Ris Mall and insisted on moving there instead.

“I gave in, despite it being way over my budget,” he wrote.

According to the post, the one-bedroom studio unit allegedly cost S$3,100 a month.

Claims he discovered affair 6 months into lease

The man alleged that about six months into their two-year lease, he discovered that his fiancée had allegedly been having an affair with his best man for almost two years.

He further claimed that the affair had allegedly continued in the condo unit they were renting together.

“After I found out, I kicked her out of my place,” he wrote.

According to the Reddit post, the pair later signed a separate agreement, stating that she would contribute S$550 a month towards the rent.

However, he claimed she stopped paying after a few months, allegedly after getting a new boyfriend and eventually removing herself from the lease entirely.

He also alleged that she got engaged during the week they had originally planned to get married.

Says S$3.1K rent became ‘intolerable’ on S$5K salary

The man said the rental situation eventually became financially unsustainable.

“S$3,100 a month is too much for my pay of roughly S$5,000 a month,” he wrote.

He added that he had attempted to terminate the lease early by offering to pay the S$1,500 agent fee and forfeit his deposit.

However, he claimed the property agent told him the landlord might pursue payment for the remaining months under the fixed-term contract.

He also said he had been unable to find another tenant willing to take over the unit due to the rental price.

In a reply to another Reddit user, the man claimed he was considering moving back to Johor Bahru and commuting to Singapore for work in order to recover financially.

“About 40k all in,” he wrote, referring to losses allegedly incurred from cancelled wedding plans and housing-related expenses.

Reddit users offer advice and support

The post drew hundreds of reactions from Reddit users, many of whom offered advice or words of encouragement.

One commenter suggested negotiating directly with the landlord.

“A contract is a contract,” the user wrote. “My suggestion is to negotiate with the landlord.”

Another user advised the man to try subletting the unit at a lower price to reduce his losses.

“You probably need to take a loss on this but hope the landlord is reasonable,” the commenter wrote.

Others encouraged him to move out and prioritise recovering emotionally and financially from the situation.
