The 58-year-old woman who died in a car accident in Jalan Besar on May 17 was supposed to celebrate her birthday the following week.

Her youngest son told Lianhe Zaobao that his mother, surnamed Wong (transliterated), was on her way to a temple to do volunteer work when she was struck by a car.

Wong is remembered as a woman who always put others before herself and was deeply loved by her relatives, friends, and colleagues.

More than 300 colleagues contributed condolence money at her funeral, Zaobao reported.

Deeply loved

The son, surnamed Li (transliterated), said his mother had supported the entire family throughout her life.

From caring for her sick husband and elderly mother to helping look after her two grandchildren, Li said Wong shouldered many responsibilities on her own and never complained.

He admitted that he did not even know what foods his mother personally liked before because she always bought things that others enjoyed.

“Whenever I asked her if she liked them too, she would always smile and say yes because she knew we liked them,” he said.

It was only after Li’s grandmother passed away two years ago that Wong finally had more time for herself.

She had just begun exploring personal interests such as yoga and martial arts.

Unexpectedly, she passed away before she could fully enjoy life.

More than 300 colleagues gave condolence money

Wong was also fondly remembered and respected by her colleagues.

She had worked as a medical trainer at a medical device company for more than 20 years.

During the funeral, more than 300 colleagues contributed condolence money.

Even the company president came to pay his respects, Zaobao reported.

Employees whom Wong had trained told Li that she was the only trainer who never scolded her trainees.

Some even said they might not have remained in their jobs for so long if not for Wong.

Kind and generous

Li also revealed that he and his girlfriend had planned to get married next year, and his mother had already chosen an auspicious date for the wedding.

The couple’s new Build-To-Order (BTO) flat is located near Wong’s home, and they were looking forward to being neighbours.

Now, Li said, that dream will never come true.

Although the family admitted it was difficult to forgive the driver at the moment, Li said his mother’s kind and generous nature might have led her to forgive him.

He also expressed hope that similar tragedies would not happen to other families.

The 31-year-old male driver involved in the accident has been arrested, and police investigations are ongoing.
