A purported engagement-themed event organised by a pair of Indonesian parents for their toddlers has reportedly sparked public criticism, according to Malaysian news outlet Kosmo!.

A video of the event uploaded to TikTok by user @adellliiyyaaaa on May 18 has since received 5.6 million views on the platform.

The video showed the user walking down the street with an entourage of people, as well as a ceremony that bore the atmosphere of an engagement ceremony.

The on-screen captions read, "Playing in-laws, Alena Arthan".

Alena and Arthan appear to be the names of the children.

The video also showed the parents and toddlers in front of a backdrop plastered with the children's names, as well as what appears to be a photoshopped image of the children posing as a loving couple.

The parents were also seen exchanging gifts.

Another video of the ceremony uploaded to TikTok page @jakarta.fess showed that the event took place in front of an audience.

The families also appeared to take a portrait together.

It is unclear if the parents intended for the event to be a humorous one, or if it was organised in earnest.

One user commented on TikTok, "They may not be meant for each other. A soulmate is in God's hands, not in human hands."

"What if they grow up and don't want to be together anymore because they each like someone else? How would that work, sis?" Another user commented.

However, some users took it more lightheartedly, with one quipping, "My parents should have done this too, so I wouldn't have to be confused about choosing someone now."
