A young Taiwanese couple in their twenties were sentenced to jail following the death of their two-month-old daughter in a car accident.
The car they were travelling in collided with a lamppost after the father attempted to pick up his daughter's dropped pacifier while driving.
The infant, who was carried in the arms of the mother in the passenger seat, was thrown into the windshield from the collision.
Children not placed in booster seats
According to EBC News, the accident occurred in the afternoon on Oct. 25, 2025.
The father, surnamed Ke (transliteration), and mother, surnamed Lin (transliteration), were travelling with their two-year-old son and two-month-old daughter at the time.
At the time of the accident, the father was 25 years old while the mother was 22 years old, local media reported.
Their son sat alone in the rear seat, while the mother, who sat in the passenger seat, carried their two-month-old daughter in her arms.
As he was driving, the father attempted to pick up his daughter's pacifier.
The car then collided with a lamp post and their daughter was thrown into the windshield.
She suffered multiple injuries, including a brain injury.
At the scene, the infant was found to have stopped breathing. She was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
When police arrived, the father voluntarily admitted fault.
Parents admitted to negligence
In deciding the sentence, the court in Taiwan recognised that the couple were still young and relatively inexperienced as parents, and lost their infant daughter due to an incident of negligence.
The court noted that the death of the two-month-old daughter would most affect the young parents.
The court also noted that the parents have admitted to their negligence and are unlikely to re-offend as the tragedy should have impressed upon them the importance of using booster seats for young children.
The parents were sentenced to six months' imprisonment, which could be commuted to a fine, as well as a two-year suspended sentence.
