The ferrying of workers in caged lorry decks will be banned in Singapore from Jan. 1, 2027.
Caged lorry decks pose additional safety risks to rear-deck passengers, Senior Minister of State Sun Xueling said during the Ministry of Transport's Committee of Supply debate in parliament on Mar. 4.
One example she shared was that if the lorry with a locked cage door is involved in an accident or on fire, workers may not be able to escape.
Sun suggested that if companies require the flexibility to transport either workers or goods on the rear deck of lorries, they can replace the cage structure with a canopy, side railings, and rain covers.
Subjected to penalties
In a joint release by MOT and the Land Transport Authority, it outlined that companies that fail to comply with the ban will be subjected to penalties.
More details on the penalties will be shared ahead of the ban.
