Immigration police in Nong Khai, Thailand, detained a 26-year-old Laotian man, identified as Tom, who allegedly murdered and dismembered his girlfriend.

According to media reports by Khaosod and The Bangkok Post, the arrest comes after eight bags containing human remains were found near a school in Nonthaburi.

According to Bangkok Post, the man had worked as a cook at a hospital, while his then-girlfriend, Ram, worked as a waitress at a bar.

He had repeatedly demanded she quit her job.

She eventually broke up with him, citing his violent temper and history of physical abuse.

According to Khaosod, Tom said he later went to her workplace in Chonburi, where he claimed to have seen her with a male customer in an intimate manner and overheard "plans to continue together at a room".

After the venue closed, he tried to ask her to return to Bangkok with him.

They eventually became involved in a heated argument, during which Tom said: "he lost control and killed her in an outburst of anger".

Ram had earlier called her brother for help on Sunday evening, but when he arrived on Tuesday, Tom said Ram had run away after a dispute.

Tom then tried to flee across the border.

He was stopped by officers there.

According to Khaosod, the man appeared calm and even joked with the police, commending them on the speed at which they solved the case.

He will now face legal proceedings.
