A 44-year-old Singaporean man, Jonathan Tey, allegedly crashed a pickup truck into plastic traffic barriers at a roundabout in Phuket on Mar. 18 at around 7:30am.

This caused the barrier to knock into a nearby officer. The officer fell, but was able to get up. Tey did not stop and drove away.

Eight traffic barriers were damaged, and the officer suffered minor injuries.

According to Thaiger, investigators traced the vehicle owner to a Thai woman, Pornphit Jitpraphat, and identified the driver as her Singaporean son-in-law.

Tey later turned himself in at the police station after officers contacted his mother-in-law about the crash.

Tey said he did not realise there had been an accident, and had only learnt about it from his mother-in-law.

The police charged him with reckless driving, causing injury and failing to stop to provide assistance.

The penalties include up to three months’ jail, a fine of 2,000 to 10,000 baht (S$78 to S$391), or both.
