Newlywed, 45, dies after accident involving lorry near Sims Avenue, had been cycling to buy food for husband

A 45-year-old woman who had been married for around four months died after she got into an accident involving a lorry while cycling to the market to buy seafood on Mar. 10, 2026.

The woman, Li Ruifei (transliterated), had recently returned to Singapore from Fujian, China, Shin Min Daily News reported, adding that Li just got married in China in November 2025.

Wanted to buy seafood

Speaking to Shin Min, her husband, Zhang (transliterated), said he never expected to be separated from his wife like this so soon after marriage.

The 55-year-old who works in construction added that on the morning of the incident, the couple were greeting relatives and wanted to add dishes to their dinner.

Li then rode her bicycle out and was headed for the nearby Geylang Serai Market to buy seafood.

Called wife, doctor answered

The couple would usually cycle together to do their shopping, said Zhang, adding that his wife went alone on the day of the accident.

Zhang later called his wife, intending to ask if she needed him to pick her up, but a doctor answered the phone instead.

SCDF told Mothership that they had conveyed one person to Changi General Hospital.

When Zhang arrived at the hospital, the doctor told him that his wife's injuries were severe, and that she had passed away.

He subsequently retrieved his wife's clothes that had blood stains and discovered that the cash in the back pocket had blood stains as well.

Driver assisting with investigations

Following this, Zhang returned to the accident scene on Mar. 11, 2026, Shin Min reported, adding that he could not understand why such a serious car accident occurred there.

He also appealed to the public to contact him if they witnessed the accident or have relevant videos or dashcam footage.

Responding to Mothership's queries, the police confirmed they were alerted at about 11:25am on Mar. 10, 2026, to an accident involving a lorry and a cyclist at the junction of Jalan Ubi and Sims Avenue.

The police said a 69-year-old male lorry driver is assisting with investigations.
