An e-bike was seen chasing after a lorry on the road from Sembawang to Yishun over a distance of about 2km.

Both road users nearly collided on a few occasions.

A video of the chase was put up on Facebook on Feb. 28.

The duration of the chase that was caught on camera, with some parts sped up, lasted about 2 minutes.

Footage started near Khatib Camp

The footage started with the two road users near Khatib Camp travelling south along Sembawang Road towards Yishun Avenue 1.

The e-bike rider sped up on the right-most lane of the two-lane road to approach the lorry from the left.

It was unclear what led to the on-road antics, but the rider was then seen pointing at the lorry's side mirror and gesticulating at the driver.

The lorry subsequently filtered left and into the path of the e-bike rider, who appeared undeterred and kept up the pace.

The lorry driver then filtered to the middle lane when the road widened, before cutting to the left-most lane again.

The lorry was subsequently seen filtering left and right between these two lanes, as the e-bike rider appeared to keep up.

Turned left to Yishun Avenue 1

The lorry slowed down at the junction of Sembawang Road and Yishun Avenue 1 when there was a build-up in traffic and turned left at the slip road towards Yishun Avenue 1.

It then travelled along the right-most lane in an apparent attempt to shake off the e-bike rider, but to no avail.

Turned into Yishun Ave 2

As the lorry approached the junction of Yishun Avenue 1 and 2, it filtered to the left-most lane to turn left into Yishun Avenue 2, apparently narrowly missing a motorcyclist.

The video cut off after the e-bike and lorry turned left into Yishun Avenue 2.

Travelled about 2km

The total distance travelled was about 2km.

Taking into account the sped up parts of the footage, both road users could have been travelling at an average speed of about 50kmh.

Responses

Online commenters slammed both road users.

Some highlighted that the e-bike rider was not keeping left and at greater risk if an accident were to occur.

Others blamed the lorry driver for partaking in a race with the e-bike rider, emphasising that those who drive ought to give way to riders and pedestrians, or choose to deescalate the situation.

Regulations

According to the Land Transport Authority (LTA), e-bikes have to be type-approved, sealed and registered before use.

The rear of the device needs to have a clearly visible number plate.

The e-bike's motor power must be progressively reduced and cut off as it reaches 25kmh, or if the cyclist stops pedalling.

When riding on roads, the cyclist should always ride as close to the left as possible and wear a helmet.
