A 37-year-old man, who was filmed vaping in an MRT train cabin in April 2025, was fined S$2,200 on Feb. 24, 2026.

This was after authorities identified him based on online footage and searched his home.

The Straits Times reported that Tay Choon Loong Aloysius was convicted of one count of possession of an imitation tobacco product, and another count of buying an imitation tobacco product.

Searched home

Prior to his conviction, officers from the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) searched his home on Apr. 22, 2025 after being informed about a TikTok video that showed Tay vaping in a train.

Though officers did not find any prohibited items, Tay admitted to being the person in the video, adding that he had disposed of the vape after using it.

Vaped to stay awake

Tay revealed during investigations that vaping had become an alternative after he quit smoking cigarettes.

He said he used the vape to keep himself awake during his commute to work.

He added that he bought the vape for S$22 at a back alley of a coffee shop in Geylang.

He said he bought three vapes on a few occasions from the same location from a Bangladeshi individual between February 2025 and March 2025, ST reported.

For possessing or purchasing vapes, an offender can be fined up to S$2,000.
