This year's Chinese New Year coincides with the beginning of Ramadan, and the coming together of these two occasions is a reminder that Singapore's multiculturalism was built over generations and cannot be taken for granted, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said in his Chinese New Year message on Feb. 16.

In his message, PM Wong, who is also Minister for Finance, also called for the spirit of care to extend beyond one's own home to include neighbours and communities.

Multiculturalism must be 'actively renewed'

PM Wong remarked that this year's CNY is "especially meaningful", as it coincides with the beginning of Ramadan for Muslims.

"The coming together of these two occasions reminds us of the beauty of multicultural Singapore – a society where different cultures, traditions and faiths live together in mutual respect," he said.

However, he continued that Singapore's harmony was built over generations and did not happen by chance, and that it must be "actively renewed" by future generations.

"Each generation has a responsibility to strengthen it – through how we live, interact and treat one another," PM Wong said.

Spirit of care should extend beyond own homes

Noting that CNY is a time of tradition and family, PM Wong remarked that families are the "foundation of our society" and highlighted several ways this year's Budget will provide more assurance and support for parents with young children.

The spirit of care should extend beyond our homes to our neighbours and communities, PM Wong said, adding that he was "heartened" to see more Singaporeans stepping forward to volunteer and champion causes.

"Together, we can build a society where we look out for one another, and act with a strong sense of collective responsibility," he said.

He also highlighted the initiatives being undertaken to ensure seniors can age with "dignity and purpose", including through Age Well SG and retirement support.

Year of the Fire Horse

The Year of the Fire Horse, which is associated with change and movement in the Chinese zodiac, is a reminder of the changing world we live in, PM Wong commented.

"These changes can feel uncertain and unsettling. But the Fire Horse also symbolises resilience and strength of spirit," he said.

"Let us face the year ahead with adaptability and confidence, ready to reimagine what is possible for ourselves and for our country. Then we can turn challenges into opportunities, and continue moving forward as one people," he continued.

Closing off his message, PM Wong said, "I wish everyone a happy Chinese New Year, and a year filled with good health, peace and prosperity."
