'Just a number': Radio DJ Hazelle Teo, 32, talks about 6-year age gap with fiancé, 26
Is it even an issue.
Radio DJ host Hazelle Teo, 32, addressed the six-year age gap between her and her 26-year-old fiancé, Singapore-based musician James Wong.
Speaking on their podcast, The Couples Classroom, Teo shared that it was "refreshing" to be in a relationship where the woman is older than the man, and Wong added that the six-year age gap is "just a number".
Teo and Wong both said they were surprised that the dynamic between an older woman and a younger man worked out, since society often expects the man to be older.
"Society always tells you, women tend to be emotionally more mature than men by two years, so it's always better to get someone who is older than you, and then this man can take care of you, like mentally, financially, and physically as well. But yeah, in all honesty, I feel like age is just a number."
Wong shared that when he first started dating Teo at 24, he felt he needed to grow up "mentally" so they could talk about "mature stuff" like life, work, career, and starting a family.
Teo added that another big reason the pair worked well was that Wong went straight into the workforce after polytechnic, which helped them relate well to each other.
Both Teo and Wong also addressed some of the comments left on their engagement posts, which was the first time the pair had made their relationship public.
Teo shared that comments were speculating that she was pregnant or that their relationship would not work out because she was six years older than he was.
On the whole, Teo said that more goes on behind the scenes than is shared on Instagram.
"We hope to you know, just give more strength and more love to people out there who are also experiencing, like, a huge age gap, and if you're feeling uncertain about your relationship, we're here to tell you that age is just a number."
Engaged
Teo announced her engagement to Wong on Jun. 6, 2025.
Teo shared the news in an Instagram post, recounting the surprise proposal that took place during the final night of a work trip in Qingdao, China.
According to Teo, she had returned from her hotel at 1am, expecting a few hours of rest before catching a 6am flight back to Singapore.
Instead, she was greeted by a room filled with flowers and warm lighting, where Wong stood waiting with a camera set up, ready to propose.
Teo revealed Wong had planned everything behind the scenes.
The couple met in 2024 during a work collaboration and have been dating ever since.
