A family in Quanzhou, China built a 15-storey condominium for more than 100 relatives to live together.

According to Khaosod, Zhu, 70, said construction started after 20 related households pooled resources for the communal living concept.

It was built about 10 years ago.

The building, located in Zhuyuan village, was developed after the family experienced space constraints in their previous home.

It was also reported that multi-generational family homes in China can no longer be built this tall anymore.

It was previously permitted years ago, which makes this building the biggest one in the village.

Multiple floors with multiple purposes

Sitting on a plot of land measuring 400sqm, the building is home to four generations of the Zhu clan with over 100 family members.

However, most younger members work in other cities, leaving around 30 elderly residents and children in the building on weekdays.

Two basement levels are used as vehicle parking spaces, while the ground floor has been converted into a food storage space and a children's play area.

A total of 22 residential apartments occupy floors two to 12, with each floor containing two units of around 200sqm each.

The family also relies on shared values and discipline, with expenses such as common-area upkeep and elevator maintenance settled privately among relatives.

Previous family home was not spacious

Zhu said the family decided to pool their money and land to build the condo as the family's old home was "very cramped".

He added that his grandchildren even had to "lie face down" on the dining table to do their homework.

He also said the building comes alive with people returning home with suitcases, and hallways filled with the smells of home-cooked food during the Lunar New Year festive season.

Zhu believes the younger generation will remember the building as their "castle of childhood".
