In December 2024, a Singaporean man told his wife at an eatery that he wanted to use some of the proceeds from the sale of their condominium to pay off his credit card bills.

When his proposal was met with disagreement from his wife, the man, Au Yong Khin Mun, assaulted her nine times over the span of five seconds.

When his wife attempted to leave the scene afterwards, he kneed her in the back twice and flung her to the ground forcefully.

For his crime, Au Yong, now 40, was sentenced to 23 months and two weeks in jail on Jan. 12, 2026, after pleading guilty to voluntarily causing grievous hurt to his wife, reported The Straits Times.

He was also sentenced to two strokes of the cane.

Married for 5 years

According to court documents seen by Mothership, at the time of the incident, Au Yong and his wife had been married for around five years.

They have two four-year-old twin daughters and one 2-year-old son.

ST reported that Au Yong and his wife were in the midst of divorce proceedings.

Disagreement arose

On Dec. 2, 2024, Au Yong and his wife dropped off their twin daughters at a preschool in Changi at around 9am.

They then headed to a canteen at Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) for breakfast.

During their meal, Au Yong told his wife that he wanted to use some of the profits from the sale of their condominium to pay off his credit card bills.

In response, his wife expressed her disagreement, stating that all profits from the sale should be used to purchase a public housing flat.

This is so that the family could live on their own, rather than with her parents.

Au Yong became physical

However, Au Yong did not take his wife's response well, as he attempted to slap her twice from across the table at around 9:30am.

When his slaps did not make contact with the victim, he walked over from his side of the table to her side.

He then hit her five times on her head with his left hand and slapped her four times on her back with his right hand within the span of five seconds.

Thereafter, Au Yong returned to his seat on his side of the table.

Wife tried to leave, Au Yong assaulted her again

Around 30 seconds after the assault, Au Yong's wife attempted to walk away from the scene.

However, when she turned her back to Au Yong, he hit her head with his cup of iced coffee.

He then hit his wife's head twice with his plate of food, twice with his left hand, and kneed her twice in the back with his left knee.

He also grabbed both her upper arms from behind and flung her to the ground forcefully.

Au Yong continued arguing with injured wife

As a result, Au Yong's wife suffered multiple injuries, including fractures in her collarbone, ribs, and face.

Although she was lying on the ground in pain, Au Yong did not render any assistance to her.

Instead, he continued arguing with her for around 1.5 minutes.

Au Yong's actions were captured by the CCTV surveillance camera.

Bystanders helped Au Yong's wife

Eventually, bystanders assisted Au Yong's wife to her feet, and she was conveyed to Changi General Hospital.

She underwent surgery and was hospitalised from Dec. 2 to Dec. 7, 2024.

During a follow-up review, the hospital assessed that Au Yong's wife's collarbone fracture would take up to six to 12 months to heal and rehabilitate.
