India news outlet NDTV reported a case of a beggar with a disability being offered help by an "anti-begging drive" in Indore, India.
The rescuers, however, uncovered the man's quite sizeable property portfolio and businesses.
They had thought Mangilal was a leprosy patient who had to spend his days begging at the market.
And while Mangilal did get about 400 to 500 rupees (about S$5 to S$7) a day, that was not where he made his keep.
Further investigations revealed he would use the money he got in the day and lend it to local traders on short-term loans.
This allowed him to earn about 1,000 to 2,000 rupees a day in these loan collections.
His other sources of income came from other rental side hustles.
According to NDTV, he also owned three houses, including a three-storey building, in prime locations, three auto-rickshaws, which were rented out daily, and a Maruti Suzuki Dzire, which is a sedan, which he also rents out instead of driving.
The man also reportedly received a one-bedroom, hall, kitchen (1BHK) unit due to his disability, despite already owning multiple properties.
Investigations are ongoing.
