S'pore CNB teams up with Indonesia authorities in anti-drug operation at Batam entertainment outlet
Five Indonesians were arrested for suspected drug-related offences.
Singapore's Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) participated in an operation led by Indonesia’s National Narcotics Board (BNN) in Batam, Indonesia, as part of its efforts to curb drug use by Singaporeans and Permanent Residents overseas.
Targeted public entertainment outlet
In a press release on Jan. 30, CNB said the operation was conducted from Jan. 17 to 18 and targeted a public entertainment outlet in Batam.
More than 100 people, including four Singaporeans, were checked during the operation.
Five Indonesians were arrested for suspected drug-related offences.
In addition to Indonesia's BNN and Singapore's CNB, the Indonesia National Police (POLRI), Indonesia National Armed Forces (TNI), Directorate General of Immigration, as well as the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) were also involved in the operation.
CNB said the coordinated, multi-agency effort highlights both countries’ commitment to disrupting cross-border drug activities and protecting their communities from the harms of drugs.
"No refuge" for those who commit drug offences
The operation demonstrated the close partnership between CNB and its Indonesian counterparts in the fight against drugs, said Assistant Commissioner Aaron Tang, CNB’s Deputy Director for Operations.
"This operation serves as a warning to drug abusers who think that they can evade CNB’s detection by going overseas to consume drugs," he said, adding that there is "no refuge" for those who continue to commit drug offences, especially when they flout the laws of other countries.
Under Section 8A of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1973, it is an offence for Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents to consume controlled drugs outside Singapore.
