M'sian influencer, 23, gave homeless man rice with chicken bones, slapped with S$13,000 fine
Tang paid the fine after the verdict was announced.
A 23-year-old social media influencer who filmed and posted an offensive video showing three teenage boys handing a homeless man rice mixed with chicken bones has been fined RM40,000 (S$12,892).
Tang Sie Luk pleaded guilty to knowingly creating and posting an extremely offensive video with the intent to cause annoyance under Malaysia's Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, reported Bernama.
Judge Sazlina Safie also ordered four months' imprisonment if Tang defaulted on the fine.
Tang paid the fine after the verdict was announced.
The video was first posted to Chinese social media platform Douyin on Aug. 3, 2025, before it was shared onto Instagram and quickly went viral.
Court imposed a deterrent sentence
Tang, who was unrepresented, appealed for the minimum fine, citing his remorse and apology.
He also admitted to uploading the over one-minute-long video.
However, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) deputy public prosecutor, Fadhi Ab Wahab urged for a deterrent sentence to both punish Tang and prevent the public from engaging in similar offences.
"The victim has also said he felt insulted and angry by the accused's actions. This was not an act of charity.
It was a calculated act of exploitation, using human suffering to create social media content for entertainment and public attention."
'A kind deed'
The video begins with a voiceover saying, "Today we are going to do a kind deed." (transliteration).
A trio of teenage boys ate a few pieces of fried chicken from a KFC box before declaring that it was "a waste to throw the bones away".
They packed the bones and rice into a bag and said they would donate them.
The teenage boys in the video proceeded to give a homeless man the food scraps along Jalan Wong Ah Fook, Johor Bahru.
