An Air India pilot was arrested in Vancouver, Canada, after he was found to be under the influence of alcohol, just before his flight was scheduled to depart.

The incident took place on Dec. 23, 2025, according to the transport regulator for Canada's government, CBC News reported.

The flight was due to depart for Delhi.

Air India issued warning

The pilot allegedly failed two breathanalyser tests conducted by Canadian police, Reuters reported.

Canada's regulator said the incident was a "serious matter" and warned Air India that it could lose its flight authorisations if it did not comply with the country's rules about alcohol consumption.

Under Canada's regulations, pilots and crew members are banned from carrying out their duties within 12 hours of drinking alcohol or while under its influence.

Canada's regulator added that it would also engage with Air India and India's aviation regulator to ensure that "appropriate follow-up actions" are taken.

A letter seen by Reuters from the regulator to the airline had asked Air India to share its findings and details of the steps taken to prevent future incidents by Jan. 26, 2026.

Air India: Pilot taken off flying duties

Meanwhile, Air India said in its own statement that the flight experienced a last-minute delay due to the incident, with an alternate pilot brought in to replace him.

The airline also acknowledged that Canadian authorities had raised concerns about the initial pilot's fitness for duty, but did not provide more details.

Air India added:

"The pilot has been taken off flying duties during the process of enquiry. Air India maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any violation of applicable rules and regulations.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, any confirmed violation will attract strict disciplinary action in line with company policy."
