MFA: S'pore 'gravely concerned' by US intervention in Venezuela, calls for restraint & 'peaceful resolution'
MFA said Singapore is also opposed to actions contrary to international law by any parties.
Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is "gravely concerned" by the U.S. intervention in Venezuela on Jan. 3.
MFA called for all parties to exercise restraint and expressed Singapore's hopes for a "peaceful resolution" to the situation in Venezuela in accordance with international law and the principles of the UN Charter.
According to U.S. President Donald Trump, the U.S. captured Venezuela's president Nicolas Maduro along his wife and flew them out of the country during a strike by the U.S. military on the Venezuelan capital of Caracas.
Trump confirmed that Maduro and his wife will face drug and narco terrorism charges in New York and added that the U.S. would run the country.
MFA: Singapore committed to international law and UN Charter principles
MFA added in its statement that Singapore is "deeply committed" to international law and the principles of the UN Charter that safeguard the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states, especially small states.
"Singapore has consistently opposed actions contrary to international law by any parties, including foreign military intervention in any country," MFA wrote.
The ministry also noted that there are no Singaporeans e-registered with MFA in Venezuela and that Singaporeans are advised to defer all travel to Venezuela.
