Japan may be putting in place more rubbish bins in tourist areas due to increased littering

A proposal has been submitted to the Shibuya Ward assembly in a bid to tackle increased littering.

According to Japanese media, trash cans will be made mandatory for stores that are in busy entertainment areas.

Stores that do not follow the rules will face penalties of up to 50,000 yen (S$415).

Those caught littering would face a 2,000 yen (S$16.60) fine.

When Nippon Television News Japan asked citizens about what they thought of a 2,000 yen fine, one respondent said it could be even higher.

Another interviewee said a fine would have to go hand in hand with more trash bins, noting that there are hardly any in Shibuya.

If approved, the revised ordinance will take effect in April 2026.
