Convicted drink driving lawyer, 56, who crashed car into railings to be removed as Justice of the Peace
Appointed in 2023.
A veteran Singaporean lawyer, Steven John Lam Kuet Kang, 56, who was recently jailed for drink driving and lying that he was a passenger, will be removed as a Justice of the Peace.
In the process of being revoked: MHA
Lam was appointed a Justice of the Peace in April 2023 by then-President Halimah Yacob.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Lam's appointment is in the process of being revoked following his conviction for various offences.
Lam was convicted of drink driving and giving false information to a public servant in November 2025.
Checks on the government directory by Mothership for Lam's name yielded no search results.
Appointed by the President of Singapore, a Justice of the Peace is conferred several powers, including laying a complaint of any offence punishable under the Children and Young Persons Act.
They may also act as marriage solemnisers.
They typically serve five-year terms.
Justices of the Peace must be "outstanding Singaporeans who have made significant contributions in their profession, the public service, social services or to the community," MHA said.
These individuals must also be of "good character and integrity, display high ethical standards, and be respected by their peers and the communities in which they are active", the ministry added.
Repeat drink driver
On Apr. 7, 2024, Lam lost control of his vehicle after a drinking session along Bukit Panjang Road.
When police arrived, Lam lied to officers that he was not the driver of the car and claimed that an unknown person had been behind the wheel.
He eventually pleaded guilty and was sentenced to eight weeks' jail and fined S$18,000 on Nov. 7, 2025.
He was also disqualified from holding or obtaining all classes of driving licences for a period of six years from his release date.
Lam was previously convicted of drink driving in 2006 as well.
He is the founder and director of Templars Law.
Lam's profile is still available on the law firm's website at the time of writing.
