Malaysia will be adding 40 new National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe) eGate units and 145 new MyNIISe QR Code scanners at Johor's border checkpoints by Dec. 31, 2025, to make travelling smoother between Malaysia and Singapore.

These new facilities will be installed in the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) in Johor Bahru, and the Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) in Iskandar Puteri, The Star reported.

The improvements aim to double the processing capacity at both entry points, especially during peak times, Malaysia's Home Ministry said on Dec. 15.

System improvements

The use of QR codes on the MyNIISe app for immigration clearance at Johor checkpoints is currently undergoing a trial run that began on Sep. 22 and will run until Feb. 28, 2026.

The aim is to expedite border crossings as travellers can use a personal QR code at dedicated lanes, instead of waiting for manual passport stamping at the counters.

However, within the first few days of the launch, many travellers reported facing difficulties with the app, such as being unable to scan their passport to register, and getting other people's personal information on the app after successfully creating an account.

In its Dec. 15 statement, Malaysia's Home Ministry said it will continue to enhance infrastructure and automation systems at the checkpoints.

It is speeding up the upgrade of the MyIMMs (Malaysian Immigration System) and NIISe systems to make them more stable and responsive.

It will also expand internet access for automation systems at critical locations, and ensure the use of MyNIISe QR Codes is not disrupted during peak hours.

The ministry has established a Special Task Force to monitor the upgrade work weekly, until all systems are fully operational by the end of December.

It expects improvements to the passage of travellers at both checkpoints by the end of 2025.
