Customer films herself hurling drink at Zus Coffee staff in M'sia, staff throws cup in return
Some online threatened to boycott the company if it remained silent or punished the employee involved.
A customer, who patronised Zus Coffee in Malaysia, filmed herself yelling and throwing coffee at a staff.
This was after the staff told the woman to get out.
A video of the incident was posted on Facebook in the early hours of Nov. 10, Sin Chew Daily reported.
Told to get out
The employee at the counter could be heard in the video saying "get out" in Mandarin a number of times, while waving her hand.
The customer filming the staff replied in Mandarin: "Who are you asking to get out?"
When told to get out again, the customer responded: "Why must I get out? I am here to buy coffee!"
Threw coffee
The customer then threw a cup of coffee across the counter and at the employee.
When the employee threw the empty cup at her, the customer threw it back and it hit the employee's head.
The customer went on to tell the female employee: "Cao ni ma."
This loosely translates to "woe be to your mother".
The other staff in the video watched the interaction but did not respond.
Threaten boycott
The Facebook video caption claimed that the customer appeared to be a Chinese national.
While the cause of the dispute was not revealed, online commenters complained that Zus Coffee, a Malaysia coffee shop chain, failed to protect its employees.
Some online threatened to boycott the company if it remained silent or punished the employee involved, according to Sin Chew Daily.
Zus Coffee responds
In a statement on Nov. 10, Zus Coffee said it has launched an internal investigation and emphasised that it does not tolerate any form of disrespect towards its staff.
"Since the incident occurred, we have taken the necessary steps to conduct a thorough investigation and we are standing with our Zurista through this time," the coffee chain said.
"Working in retail isn't always easy, and things should never have escalated the way they did. At the end of the day, we're all only humans doing our best," it added.
The company urged the public to respect the privacy of its staff as it continues to investigate the matter, and to refrain from sharing the video, as well as not spread false statements.
"Our Zurista is currently recovering from this incident, we appreciate everyone's kind assistance to allow her the space to recover, while we attend to the matter with care and fairness," it said.
