U.S. president Donald Trump has enacted an indefinite pause on migration from all "Third World Countries" in the wake of the shooting and death of a National Guard member in Washington D.C. on Nov. 26.

The shooter, who allegedly targeted U.S. troops near the White House in an "ambush-like" attack, has been identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national seeking asylum in the United States.

Two National Guard members were shot and sent to the hospital in critical condition following the attack.

Trump imposes migration ban

In a Truth Social post dated Nov. 28 (SGT), Trump announced that he will "permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries to allow the U.S. system to fully recover".

He blasted the Biden administration for what he called millions of "illegal admissions", alluding to Lakanwal's entry into the U.S. under the administration in 2021.

Lakanwal reportedly entered the country under Biden's "Operation Allies Welcome" during the Taliban offensive, and later applied for asylum in 2024, which was granted by the Trump administration in 2025, according to CNN.

He is said to have formerly worked with the U.S. government including the CIA, which contributed to his entry into the country.

In his post, Trump vowed to "remove anyone who is not a net asset to the United States" and "deport any Foreign National who is a public charge, security risk, or non-compatible with Western Civilization".

"Only REVERSE MIGRATION can fully cure this situation," he said.

The U.S. Department of Homeland announced on Nov. 27 that the current administration is reviewing all asylum cases approved under Biden.

Processing of all immigration requests relating to Afghan nationals in particular have also been stopped indefinitely, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said.
