1 S'porean among 57 arrested in Cambodia during scam centre raid
Majority of those arrested were Taiwanese.
One Singaporean was among 57 people arrested by Cambodian police during a raid of a scam centre in a city in Cambodia on Nov. 4.
They are suspected of operating transnational telecommunication-related scams out of the centre.
57 arrested
On Nov. 4, Cambodian police mounted a raid of a scam centre in the city of Krong Bavet, according to The Cambodia China Times.
Krong Bavet is a Cambodian border city neighbouring Vietnam, just two hours from Ho Chi Minh City by car.
A total of 57 foreigners were rounded up during the raid.
Apart from the one Singaporean, 32 Taiwanese, 13 Japanese, eight Filipinos and three Vietnamese were also apprehended.
Local police seized multiple computers, handphones and other telecommunication equipment during the raid.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the syndicate was operating transnational telecommunication-related scams.
On Jul. 14, Cambodia's prime minister Hun Manet announced a national effort to tear down scam networks operating out of Cambodia.
Between Jun. 27 to Oct. 14, 92 enforcement operations have been carried out across 18 of Cambodia's provinces and cities.
A total of 3,455 persons from 20 different nationalities have been arrested
