Namewee remanded for 6 days as M'sia police investigates Taiwanese influencer's death as murder case
He turned himself in.
Malaysian rapper Namewee, also known as Wee Meng Chee, will be held in remand for six days as police look into the death of a Taiwanese influencer in a Kuala Lumpur hotel.
Earlier on Nov. 5, the rapper had rubbished claims that he was on the run and turned himself in.
Police sought seven-day remand
According to China Press, Malaysian police had sought a seven-day remand for Wee.
"Of course, we opposed. We opposed the remand, saying that he shouldn't be detained because the incident happened 14 days ago. Magistrate gave [him] six days," Wee's lawyer told local media, China Press reported.
The lawyer also said this was all that he could confirm at this point.
Police said manhunt launched
The body of 31-year-old Taiwanese influencer Hsieh Yu-hsin, also known as Iris Hsieh, was found in a luxury hotel room at Jalan Conlay in KL at about 1:40pm on Oct. 22.
Malaysia police initially classified her death as a case of sudden death.
On Nov. 4, they reclassified Hsieh's death as murder, and sought Wee's arrest as he was the last person to be with her when she was alive.
They then said Wee could not be located and initiated a manhunt.
Wee responded in the early hours of Nov. 5 via an Instagram post, saying that he was never on the run.
He had arrived back in Kuala Lumpur from Johor Bahru, and had previously arranged an appointment with the police.
"I will fully cooperate with the police and be accountable to the public and the deceased's family," Wee wrote in his post.
He was later seen turning himself in at a police headquarters in KL alongside his lawyer.
