A part of a newly opened Hongqi bridge in the southwestern province of Sichuan, China collapsed on Nov. 11, after conditions on the mountainside worsened and triggered a landslide.

The 758m-long bridge's collapse created a huge dust plume, according to a video of the dramatic moment.

Officials in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture confirmed that the 172m-tall bridge at the Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station had collapsed.

A day before the collapse on Nov. 10, authorities had already closed the bridge after cracks appeared on nearby slopes and roads, BBC reported.

Conditions subsequently worsened

No casualties were reported.

Reuters reported that the bridge was along a national highway linking the country's heartland with Tibet.

Construction completed earlier in 2025

BBC reported that construction of the Hongqi bridge had been completed earlier in 2025.

This is based on a social media post by the contractor Sichuan Road & Bridge Group on social media.

According to Zhihu.com, the 220m mid-span of the bridge was successfully completed on Jan. 14, 2025, with concrete being poured for the closure beam section.
