WP donates over S$63,000 to party charity, AHTC & SKTC after conclusion of lawsuits
Party leaders Sylvia Lim, Pritam Singh and Low Thia Khiang also thanked those who have supported them "in one way or another."
The Workers' Party (WP) has officially concluded their lawsuits involving Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) and Sengkang Town Council (SKTC).
In joint statements dated Oct. 2 and shared on Sylvia Lim's Facebook page on Oct. 3, WP leaders Sylvia Lim, Low Thia Khiang and Pritam Singh said this means "there is no longer a need" to maintain the joint bank account used to raise funds.
As such, they have donated the remaining monies to their registered charity.
Closed WP joint account, donates remaining funds to WP charity
In one statement pertaining to the closure of a WP joint account, they announced that the remaining balance of S$5,826.14 from their 2018 fund-raising appeal was donated to the WP Community Fund, the party's registered charity.
This follows the conclusion of court proceedings brought against its leaders by the Independent Panels of AHTC and SKTC.
"This statement is issued to inform the public about how we have dealt with the balance sums in the account," the leaders wrote.
The joint bank account was opened in 2018 to facilitate fundraising for legal costs.
The donation will assist families in need, and the account has since been closed.
Donates over S$57,000 to AHTC and STC
Another joint statement shared by the leaders announced another donation of S$57,727 in remaining legal funds to AHTC and SKTC.
The donation was made in late September 2025, with S$26,958 given to AHTC and S$30,768 to SKTC.
The amounts were apportioned according to each town council's share of the legal costs in a ruling by the Court of Appeal on Nov. 29, 2023.
The court had awarded the WP leaders legal costs of S$230,701 for the appeal in both lawsuits, which comprised of S$107,696 from AHTC and S$123,004 from STC.
The lawsuits, first filed in 2017, were settled in July 2024 through mediation on a "drop-hands" basis — meaning all parties discontinued their claims and bore their own legal costs.
Over the seven-year proceedings, the WP leaders incurred more than S$3.1 million in legal fees and disbursements, of which they personally contributed over S$1.4 million.
They also acknowledged the support of members of the public, friends and acquaintances who had contributed towards their legal expenses.
Of this sum, S$172,983 was used to settle outstanding lawyers' bills.
"As at Aug. 27, the amount stood at S$57,727, which could have been used to reimburse us for the S$1.4 million we have paid. We have, however, donated the balance monies to the town councils in the proportions stated above," Lim, Singh and Low wrote.
WP thanks supporters, closes matter
In her Facebook post, Lim thanked those who have stood by the party and its leaders "in one way or another".
"It's been more than a year since the Town Council litigation against Mr Low Thia Khiang, LO Pritam Singh, myself and others was finally settled. We have provided our updates on our blog to close the matter."
