Five people were rushed to the hospital, and three were pronounced dead at the scene.
Two of the fatalities were a Thai driver and a South Korean tourist who had been in the same vehicle.
The driver had picked up his friend, the South Korean, at the airport for a holiday, and were on their way to Pattaya when they collided with the other cars.
The third victim was Jirawadee Tonthongdaeng, a young nursing student who was not involved in the first crash, but had stopped to provide assistance.
On their way to a birthday celebration
Tonthongdaeng and her husband, Wanchaloem Anchunee, were taking a trip to celebrate Tonthongdaeng's birthday, according to The Thaiger.
On the motorway, they encountered a chain collision between four cars, and stopped their car to help.
Tonthongdaeng called for rescue services and got out to the road to direct traffic away from the crash.
A car travelling at high speed failed to see her in time and knocked her down.
Her body has been returned to her home province of Sisaket for funeral rites.
Anchunee, a rescue volunteer on Sawang Rescue Saraburi team, was also injured by the car, and was sent to Chon Buri Hospital in critical condition.
Due to a shortage of blood supplies, the hospital has urgently appealed for blood donations for Anchunee, the Sawang Rescue Saraburi team wrote on Facebook.

The highway police will investigate the accident and interview the injured once they have stabilised, according to The Pattaya News.
