A 10-year-old girl in Thailand died on Oct. 11 after she was electrocuted while using a hair dryer that had been bought online and stored away for about two years.

The Bangkok Post reported that the prior to her death, the girl was using a hair dryer suspected to be of "substandard quality".

Grandmother found the girl

The girl was a fourth-grade student, according to Thai media outlet PPTVHD36.

She was from a village in Nong Teng, Krasang district in the Buriram province of northeastern Thailand.

According to the Bangkok Post, the girl's grandmother, Kaewnapa, had just returned home after working in Bangkok as a street vendor.

On Oct. 11, Kaewnapa was sitting outside the house.

Another grandchild then told her that the girl was "playing with the plug socket".

Found motionless

Upon entering the room, Kaewnapa found the girl was lying motionless on the floor with her mouth open.

Her right hand was still holding on to the hair dryer that was plugged into the power socket.

Kaewnapa immediately unplugged the hair dryer.

However, the girl was found to be unresponsive when rescue workers arrived after relatives called for help.

A preliminary examination suggested electrocution to be the cause of death.

This is because burn marks were found on the girl's right hand, which had been holding the hair dryer.

Rarely used hair dryer

The Bangkok Post reported that according to the girl's mother, the hair dryer had been purchased around two to three years ago.

However, the hair dryer was said to be rarely used and kept in a cupboard.

According to the Bangkok Post, the girl took out the hair dryer to dry her hair after a shower.

Her family deeply regrets her death and urged others to be careful when using "uncertified electrical appliances purchased online".

Villagers from the district travelled to assist with the funeral and express their condolences to the girl's grandmother.

Strict regulations

In light of the incident, the Deputy Minister of Industry told the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) to investigate, according to thansettakij.com.

TISI has been ordered to strictly enforce the regulations on electrical appliances that are popular among consumers and are controlled products.
