An elderly woman, 75, was assaulted by a male stranger after she asked him to give way.

The incident happened at Mayflower Market and Food Centre on Oct. 11 at around 9am.

By speaking to the media, Yong Mou Chung's family hopes witnesses can come forward to assist in police investigations.

What happened

According to Yong's family, Yong placed her grocery trolley next to a table in front of a fishball stall.

After buying coffee, she returned to the table to collect her trolley, only to find a woman sitting there with a stroller next to it.

The alleged assailant was standing there too.

Yong politely asked them to give way, but the man got angry and scolded her, asking if she was blind.

Yong said that the man used Hokkien vulgarities at her and even spat in her face twice.

Yong asked why he had to be so rude and wanted an apology from him.

At this point, the woman was already pulling the man away, Yong recounted.

However, she said the man not only did not apologise but also kicked and pushed her.

Yong tried to shield herself with her hand, and in doing so, she spilt her coffee on him.

Enraged, the man punched Yong's face, and the impact caused her to fall to the ground.
