Taiwanese man sues wife's senior colleague at school for having affair with her
Infringement of spousal rights.
A Taiwanese man has sued his wife's senior colleague for having an affair with her.
The man, Wei (pseudonym), had been married to Jie (pseudonym) since 2006. They have two children together.
In 2022, Jie began an affair with the head of the accounting department, Yong (pseudonym), at the Kaohsiung school where they worked. Jie is a teacher.
According to Taiwan media, they began a physical relationship, and often went to hotels and motels to have sex.
Yong also sent inappropriate text and photo messages to Jie.
Yong and Jie also referred to each other as husband and wife in their text messages.
According to ET Today, Wei discovered the affair in November 2023, when he came across some of their texts.
He eventually decided to take the man to court.
In court, Yong claimed he did not know that Jie was married.
The judge rejected the claim, pointing to how, as the head of accounting, he would have been aware of Jie's application for financial subsidies for her children.
Wei said he had suffered panic attacks after finding out about the affair, a symptom which factored into his claim of 800,000 Yuan (S$145,395).
The judge, however, noted that he had these symptoms prior to uncovering the extramarital affair.
Yong was ultimately found to have interfered with the marriage, even though he knew of the woman's marital status.
The court found him guilty of infringing on Wei's spousal rights.
The judge also pointed out that Yong was earning significantly more than Wei, and ultimately ordered Yong to pay Wei 300,000 Yuan (S$54,527). Yong can still appeal the verdict.
