S'pore man, 44, arrested for public drunkenness after lying down in front of Serangoon Road oncoming traffic

A video on Facebook showed a car slowing down to avoid running over him.

A 44-year-old man in Singapore was arrested on Oct. 4 for public drunkenness after he could be seen lying down in front of oncoming traffic.

The incident which took place at Serangoon Road, was posted on Facebook account "Beh Chia Lor - Singapore Road".

Obstructing traffic

In the video, cars can be seen driving along a four-lane road as the traffic light was green.

However, one car suddenly stopped in the middle of the road as a man could be seen lying down on one of the lanes.

The man did not appear to be fully clothed.

Wee hour incident

In response to queries from Mothership, the police said they received a call for assistance at 900 Serangoon Road at about 2:25am on Oct. 4.

No injuries were reported. Police investigations are ongoing.

Penalties

If convicted, the man is liable to be jailed for up to a month, fined up to S$1,000, or both.

According to Singapore Statutes Online, public drunkenness is defined as a state of being drunk and incapable of taking care of oneself in a public space.

Being drunk is also defined as someone whose coordination, speech, balance or behaviour is noticeably affected, and it is reasonable in the circumstances to believe this is a result of the consumption of alcohol.

Repeat offenders can be jailed for up to three months, fined up to S$2,000, or both.
