The police showed up at People's Park Food Centre in Chinatown after a public pay phone on the premises was allegedly frequently used to make prank calls.

Police officers were seen at around 8am on Oct. 2, outside the toilet of the ground floor food centre where the public phone was located.

A member of the public initially thought a death had occurred in the vicinity, but saw that the ambulance left the scene subsequently.

A Shin Min Daily News reporter subsequently saw police personnel inspecting the pay phone.

They appeared to be gathering evidence and left around 10am.

A vendor in the building said he suspected someone had been using the pay phone to call the police.

There are two pay phones available in the complex.

The vendor said: "There's a woman who has been there for the past three or four months, talking to herself on the pay phone. I'm not sure if she used the pay phone this morning."
