An 11-year-old boy's attempt to "strengthen his tongue" with a piece of gold sent him to the hospital after he swallowed it.

Sin Chew Daily reported that the boy, who is from China's Jiangsu province, swallowed his mother's 10g bean-shaped gold piece.

Shocking incident

His mother, Ji, bought the gold piece online on Oct. 17 for RMB10,000 (S$1,824), according to Sina Finance.

After Ji received the gold on Oct. 22, her son began to play with it as he wanted to "exercise his tongue".

She was washing clothes on the balcony when her son told her that he had swallowed the gold.

Expensive poop

She remembered that her niece had previously swallowed a coin and the doctor said it could be passed out.

In addition, she read online that gold could also be passed out.

However, she reminded her son not to defecate outside as his faeces were "expensive".

Passed bean out

After waiting for five days and checking her son's faeces from two bowel movements, Ji still could not find her gold piece.

She then took her son to Kunshan People's Hospital on Oct. 26.

He was diagnosed with a foreign body in his stomach but had no symptoms such as abdominal pain and vomiting.

Sin Chew Daily reported that Ji's son finally passed out the gold on Oct. 26.

According to Sina Finance, Ji's social media post of the incident garnered over 500,000 views.
