A man in Taipei, Taiwan, was sentenced to 30 years in prison and fined NT$500 million (S$21.1 million) for molesting multiple children at a kindergarten.

In its ruling, the court said his crimes warranted a cumulative prison term of over 3,000 years.

From September 2021 to July 2023, he molested victims at a kindergarten owned and run by his mother, and where he was previously a staff member.

He also illicitly filmed minors in public spaces.

Sexual assaults

Mao Chun-shen was found guilty on Sep. 24 of 232 counts of secretly filming minors in public spaces, including streets, restaurants, malls and parks, Taipei Times reported.

He was also convicted of 191 counts of indecent assault of girls under 14, including filming the assaults while they were being committed.

A number of children he molested were under the age of seven, Focus Taiwan said.

His crimes reportedly first came to light in 2022 after the parent of a girl who attended the kindergarten reported to the police that her daughter had been sexually assaulted by Mao, according to Taiwanese media CNA.

Investigations found that he had exploited his position as a childcare worker at his mother's kindergarten to force the children to have sexual intercourse with him, molested them and photographed them sexually against their will.

He also ordered the children not to disclose the incidents.

Previous conviction

Mao had previously been convicted for the same case in 2024 with another 87 charges, where he was sentenced to 28 years' and eight months in prison.

The court said that his actions caused the victims and their families severe physical and mental trauma.

The total number of convictions now sits at 510, which the court said warrants a cumulative sentence of 3,552 years' imprisonment.

He was, however, eventually given the legal maximum statutory sentence of 30 years in jail and a fine of NT$500 million (S$21 million), which can be appealed in court.
