Malaysia's anti-corruption agency (MACC) is stepping up efforts to trace and recover assets allegedly linked to former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad and his family.

Malay Mail reported that to do this, they are "forging cooperation" with UK authorities.

According to a "well-placed" source, MACC has held multiple meetings with a specialised unit under UK's National Crime Agency.

According to the source, once the "official list of assets" from UK authorities involving countries being looked into is completed, the legal process for the seizure of the identified assets will begin.

In a press conference, Chief Commissioner Azam Baki said MACC was seeking "detailed information" from the UK authorities on overseas assets allegedly owned by Mahathir.

Mahathir has responded to these claims in a Facebook post.

"1. I'm amazed after reading the statement by Tan Sri Azam Baki that the SPRM will be investigating about my assets in the UK.

2. I'm also puzzled.

3. It seems like I have assets in the UK.

4. I didn't know.

5. Please let me know so I can claim this asset.

6. After getting this asset, I will disburse it to the less fortunate.

7. Actually I think Datuk Seri Anwar told SPRM to do this investigation to delay the case. When I sued him, he asked for a two-week deferment.

8. It has been two years. Still not willing to go to court. Still delaying. As if I have assets in the UK. Investigation will take time. Delay again."
