Telegram WhatsappJust over six weeks after denying reports that he intends to resign, Japan's PM Shigeru Ishiba has decided to step down.

Reuters reports that Japan's public broadcaster NHK said on Sep. 7 that Ishiba made his decision to avoid a split within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

Ishiba is the third prime minister in a row to not make it a full term, after disappointing general election results and losing upper house elections.

He was one of nine candidates who vied to succeed Fumio Kishida in October 2024, and his resignation will likely force another round of fierce competition within the LDP.
