Mediacorp actress Fang Rong, 29, announced on her Instagram that she would be taking a break from acting after 22 years in the showbiz.

Fang Rong, who studied psychology, said she hoped to "channel her empathy and nurturing soul more meaningfully into service", to serve those in need in a "world full of pain".

Leaving the showbiz, for now

"With a heart full of gratitude, I’m announcing my departure from the acting world, for now," Fang Rong wrote.

She said she wants to make a difference in a way that's "personal" and "tangible".

She added that the decision had been "many years in the making".

Having started her acting career at the tender age of seven, Fang Rong also said she had no regrets growing up in the industry as a child actress, adding that she is "thankful for all the kind souls along the way who saw me and affirmed my potential”.

“Acting has always been about empathy and genuine connection, and that is a part of me that will never change. It has simply taken on a new form, and I’m so excited for this journey to unfold."

A number of local celebrities showed support and well wishes to Fang Rong's new chapter in the comment section of her post.

Grew up as child actress

Her first brush with the media industry was acting in an advertisement when she was four, Fang Rong said in a 2023 Yahoo interview.

"The filming set was my playground, with different toys like the cameras and booms and stuff," Fang Rong said of her experience as a child actress.

Fang Rong went on to take roles in various Channel 5 and Channel 8 dramas such as "My Sassy Neighbour", "Dear Neighbours", "Fried Rice Paradise", "My Guardian Angels" and "In Safe Hands".

In 2018, she graduated with a degree in Psychology.

Fang Rong was recognised with the title of "Best Rising Star" at the Busan Film Festival in 2019.

More recently, she starred as "Qing Ling" in 2023 period drama “Last Madame: Sisters of the Night”.

This announcement came before the premiere of local drama "Fixing Fate", Fang Rong's first Mandarin drama as a female lead.
