A 23-year-old Singaporean man was sentenced to four and a half years' jail and 12 strokes of the cane on Sep. 29 for hitting another man with a brick after receiving oral sex.

According to court documents, Richard M. Azhar, along with another man, Shakur Han Bin Shaid, 21, had assaulted the 44-year-old man between 12:10am and 12:30am on Feb. 4.

The incident occurred in a back alley along Geylang Lorong 21.

Also punched, kicked and stole from man

Azhar and Shakur had approached the man, who was not named in court documents, together for paid oral sex.

The man had agreed to provide sexual services to them for S$50 each, and the three men headed to the back alley.

After the act, Azhar said that he did not have enough money and tried to take the victim's bag.

When the victim resisted, Azhar punched him several times.

Shakur then allegedly joined in the assault, punching and kicking the man before pinning him to the ground.

Both men allegedly tore his bag and struck him with a brick weighing about 1.93kg.

They then allegedly left the man in the alley without seeking help, taking with them his phone, identification cards, an ATM card, and about S$40 in cash.

Azhar also took a photograph of the man's identity card, intending to use it to borrow money from loan sharks.

Man suffered multiple injuries

At around 9am on Feb. 4, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the assault.

The man was found unconscious, lying in a pool of blood, with a bloodstained brick nearby.

He was taken to Changi General Hospital, where doctors found extensive injuries, including a skull fracture, traumatic brain injury, multiple facial fractures, and compartment syndrome in both legs.

He underwent several surgeries and required prolonged rehabilitation.

The man was later transferred between Changi General Hospital and St Andrew's Community Hospital for further treatment and physiotherapy.

He was eventually discharged on Jun. 13.

Medical fees at St Andrew's Community Hospital alone amounted to over S$37,000, according to court documents.

Azhar was arrested on the afternoon of Feb. 4 and subsequently charged with robbery with hurt.
