Chinese toddler who drank hot soup with straw rushed to hospital after throat severely burnt
The hot temperature made his throat swell to the size of a ping-pong ball
A two-and-a-half-year-old toddler in Guangxi, China, nearly died after drinking hot soup with a straw.
This is because the soup was at a high temperature.
Sin Chew Daily reported that the young boy was rushed to the hospital with severe burns in his throat, which swelled to the size of a ping-pong ball.
He nearly died of respiratory failure but survived after treatment.
Home alone
This incident took place on the evening of Sep. 21.
The boy decided to drink the hot soup on the table while his parents were at work.
Drank hot soup with straw
However, instead of taking small sips, he sucked the soup directly into his throat.
The hot soup scalded his throat, causing him to scream and cry.
Initial diagnosis
Following the incident, his family rushed him to the hospital.
He was initially diagnosed with burns in his throat and mouth, accompanied by laryngeal obstruction and difficulty breathing.
Condition worsened
However, the boy's condition soon worsened.
His blood oxygen level began to drop sharply. He also developed symptoms, including respiratory failure and severe laryngeal obstruction.
Upon performing an endoscopic examination, doctors found that the boy's throat had swelled to the size of a ping-pong ball.
The boy survived after treatment and was out of danger the next afternoon.
Take precautions
According to the doctor, the very high temperature of the soup burned the boy's throat instantly after he drank it.
The boy's throat then became hoarse. He also had difficulty breathing for half an hour and suffered severe laryngeal obstruction three times, which left only a tiny channel in his entire throat for breathing.
The doctor urged parents to pay special attention to young children at home, as such incidents can put their lives in danger.
