S'pore camp instructor, 24, gets 8 weeks' jail for sending nudes to girl, 15, asking her for sex

A 24-year-old man in Singapore was sentenced to eight weeks' jail on Sep. 1 after he pleaded guilty to sending a photo of his private parts to a 15-year-old girl.

Camp instructor Ilyas Mohd Yusoff had also sent lewd messages and asked her to have sex with him, reported CNA.

The two had met in March 2023 while he was employed as an external camp instructor and assigned to her secondary school for a three-day camp.

A gag order was issued to protect the girl's identity while the names of her school and his company were not disclosed.

Harassed her with lewd messages

Ilyas had started talking to the girl when he was appointed to facilitate her class, and both of them continued messaging on messaging app Telegram and also social media app Snapchat until May 2023.

He started sending her lewd messages but had also sent her normal non-sexual messages throughout the period, according to CNA.

The conversations later escalated sexually.

Ilyas told the girl that he felt aroused when she was "threatening" him, and also later asked her to have sexual intercourse with him.

On May 1, 2023, he sent her an explicit image of his penis via Snapchat.

The deputy public prosecutor said Ilyas had also wanted the girl to blackmail him with the photo, as such threats would arouse him.

The girl felt uncomfortable and harassed by the continued messages and reported it to her school.

The school alerted the police.

Lighter sentence due to age and clean record

The deputy public prosecutor initially sought a jail sentence of 12 to 15 weeks.

However, his lawyer Ashvin Hariharan requested for a sentence of six to eight weeks instead, claiming that his client had not intended to harass the girl.

He added that she had also approached Ilyas first by adding him on social media.

Hariharan also said that when Ilyas had asked her for sex, he meant that they would do it after she turned 16.

Ilyas pleaded guilty to one count of intentionally causing a minor to observe a sexual image, with another charge taken into consideration during sentencing.

The judge indicated she was inclined toward Hariharan's proposed range considering Ilyas' age, clean record, and the fact that he sent a photo rather than a video.
