Branch from decaying tree falls & smashes through glass window of Yishun flat

Two flats along Yishun Street 22 were damaged when a branch from a nearby decaying tree broke off and fell onto the HDB block.

One of the units had its glass window broken in the incident, raining glass shards over its resident, according to The Straits Times.

No one was reported to have sustained injuries.

Nee Soon GRC MP Jackson Lam said in a Facebook post that the incident occurred at Block 259 Yishun Street 22.

The tree was found to be in a state of decay, weakening its structure.

Works by a landscaping company were underway to remove it, but this unintentionally worsened its condition and caused the tree branch to fall against the block and damage two HDB units, Lam said.

"I spoke with the Town Council's horticulture team and understand that necessary safety precaution was taken before the removal of the tree," he added, including informing residents beforehand and cordoning off the area.

Branch smashed through window

ST reported that the branch smashed through the glass windows of one of the units, causing fragments to land on the face of a resident who was lying on a couch next to it.

He escaped unscathed, but his hearing was temporarily impacted due to the loud sound.

Cracks were also reportedly seen on the living room walls and window grilles were bent from the impact.

A metal signboard in the park below the block was also mangled, in a photo posted by Lam when he visited the site.

He assured residents that the Town Council is in the process of clearing the debris and surveying the damages.

A separate team is concurrently removing the tree for safety reasons, he added.

The town council will also be assisting the affected family in seeking compensation from the landscaping company, Lam said, according to ST.
