If you are going to be out and about in Singapore this August, it would be best to bring an umbrella.

This is because the first half of August 2025 is expected to be wetter, with thundery showers expected on most days in Singapore, according to a forecast by Meteorological Service Singapore.

More thundery showers expected

MSS said that in the first fortnight of August 2025, thundery showers are expected over parts of the island in the late morning and afternoon on most days.

Southwest Monsoon conditions are expected to prevail in Singapore, with winds blowing mainly from the southeast or southwest.

In addition, Sumatra squalls may bring widespread thundery showers and gusty winds in the pre-dawn and morning on a few days, said the forecast.

The Sumatra Squall is a line of thunderstorms that develops over Sumatra, Indonesia, and moves over the Straits of Malacca, leading to heavy rain and strong winds in Singapore and Malaysia.

A squall brings gusty winds at speeds of up to 80km/h and heavy downpour that can last for one to two hours.

Sumatra Squalls are most common from April to November, and coincide with the southwest or inter-monsoon period.

The total rainfall for the first fortnight of August 2025 is forecast to be above average over most parts of the island, MSS said.

Daily maximum temperatures are likely to range between 32 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius on most days.

Wetter conditions than 2nd half of July

Compared to the upcoming forecast for August, the second fortnight of July saw fair and warm weather on most days.

The daily maximum temperatures were above 33 degrees Celsius on most days.

The highest daily maximum temperature was 34.9 degrees Celsius, recorded at Admiralty on Jul. 17 and at Paya Lebar on Jul. 18.

If you found it difficult to fall asleep, it could be because there were several warm nights in the second fortnight of July where minimum temperatures remained above 27 degrees Celsius.

These were experienced particularly over the eastern, southern and western parts of the island.

Most parts of Singapore also recorded below average rainfall in the second fortnight of July 2025.

For instance, the area around Paya Lebar registered rainfall of 83 per cent below average, while the area around Clementi registered rainfall of 24 per cent above average.

A respite from the drier conditions came about on Jul. 30, when the regional convergence of winds brought moderate to heavy thundery showers over many areas of Singapore in the night.

That day saw the highest rainfall recorded for the second fortnight of July 2025, with a daily total rainfall of 88.4mm recorded at Lower Peirce Reservoir.
