Two Singaporeans were among three men arrested in Malaysia for allegedly trying to illegally exit the country via "a major land checkpoint".

The Star reported that the three men, including an Indian national, are "in their 20s and 30s".

They were caught in two separate incidents and police reports were made.

All three were found to have no valid entry records when they were checked at the checkpoint while trying to leave Malaysia.

They were detained by the Immigration Department in Malaysia several days ago and were held in remand as investigations continue.

Police reports have been filed for both incidents, The Star added.

First case

One Singaporean allegedly entered Johor Bahru without having his passport stamped.

He was caught while trying to exit the country.

He claimed he had taken a wrong route.

Investigations showed he might have entered Malaysia using an unmanned motorcycle lane at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (BSI) complex.

Second case

The other incident involved two men, another Singaporean and an Indian national, who were riding a motorcycle.

Both of them had no entry records in the system and were stopped.

Penalties

All three are being investigated under the Immigration Act for entering the country without valid documentation.

If convicted, they face up to RM10,000 (S$3,040) in fines, a maximum of five years’ jail, and up to six strokes of the cane.

Investigations are ongoing.

Previous cases

The Star also reported that Malaysian motorcyclists rushing to work have also faced stiff penalties for failing to scan their passports.

Some were even caught forcefully opening lane barriers at the checkpoint connected to the Causeway during peak hours.

The Immigration Department there has also carried out operations to clamp down on Malaysians and Singaporeans attempting to bypass passport checks at both BSI and the Second Link.
