A 14-year-old student has pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt after being arrested for allegedly punching and threatening a teacher at a secondary school in Kajang, Selangor.

A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media.

According to New Straits Times (NST), Kajang police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abd Yusof said that the student was arrested on Jul. 29, a day after the 29-year-old teacher filed a police report.

Student skipped his PE lesson

In the video circulating online, the student could be seen throwing a punch at the teacher while grinning at him.

The two were also seen grabbing each other by their collars.

According to Naazron, preliminary investigations revealed that the student had skipped his physical education (PE) lesson, which prompted the teacher to reprimand him, NST reported.

However, the student "[became] dissatisfied and eventually [got] into a fight" with the teacher.

He added that "the student then punched the teacher in the face and issued threats in the presence of several teachers and students".

Further investigations are ongoing

According to NST, Naazron stated that the case is being investigated under Sections 323 and 506 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation.

If convicted under Section 323, the student could face up to one year imprisonment, or be subjected to a fine not exceeding RM2,000 (about S$606), or both.

If convicted under Section 506, the student could face up to two years' imprisonment, or be subjected to a fine, or both.

Pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt

NST reported that the student pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt at the magistrate's court on Jul. 31.

The student's lawyer, S. Priyalatha, said that the magistrate granted the student a RM1,000 (about S$300) bail with one surety.

The prosecution had initially offered a RM5,000 (about S$1,515) bail with one surety, but Priyalatha asked for minimal bail as the boy is a "student, underage and a juvenile offender".

The court also set Sep. 11 for the submission of a social report from the Welfare department before sentencing.
