I went for a super-extra girl’s night out at S’pore’s highest rooftop bar & it was great

No “girl dinners” here.

Have you ever heard of “girl dinner”?

The idea is basically a small, simple meal — more like a snack or salad plate than a full dinner. Think a one-person charcuterie board, maybe a glass of rosé.

It’s cute, it’s quirky, it’s feminine. It’s also never enough.

So when I was asked to organise a girl’s night out for a few of my friends, I wanted to go the exact opposite route.

I decided to bring them out for a super extra night out at HighHouse and Nova.

All boujee, all over-the-top, all the way.

Views for days

The first stop was HighHouse, a ritzy restaurant on the 62nd floor of One Raffles Place.

After a very long elevator ride, we were greeted by sweeping glass windows that opened up to panoramic views of the city.

I admit it: I worried that it’d be one of those gourmet restaurants where we get served tiny little bites of mediocre food, and all end up having to go to McDonald’s after.

But I was pleasantly surprised.

Not only was the food generously portioned, it was all exceptional.

My favourite dishes were the “Lobster Mac & Cheese”, the “Grilled Octopus”, and a dish cheekily named “That Expensive Indomie You’ve Heard About”

I particularly enjoyed the way they surprised me with jazzed-up renditions of casual food.

Believe me, this is one mac and cheese recipe your mum could not replicate at home.

In the spirit of girl’s night, we also went for some of HighHouse’s signature artisan cocktails.

I selected the Andean Bloom, which was made of homemade blackberry cordial, elderflower liquor, and rice tea-infused banana rum.

Honestly. Why go for a boring old beer when you can get a fruity, floral little drink that’ll make you forget about your ex in three delicious sips?

The entertainment

Midway through the dinner, a trio of cabaret-style performers danced on a balcony above the bar.

Then they came around to give us free shots.

My friends were thoroughly entertained by that alone. But the night was just beginning.

After we were done with our food, we were ushered into Hideout, a private karaoke room tucked discreetly away in a corner of the restaurant.

We ordered more food and cocktails (extra, remember?) and began shortlisting our karaoke tunes of choice.

The extensive catalogue of music meant we could cater to everyone’s favourites: Ashley’s 2000s classics, Hannah’s “Wicked” songs, and my 90s pop-punk.

There was even a selection of K-pop, for my Korean friend Mikayla.

Singing works up an appetite. Fortunately, that was when our food and drinks arrived.

Somewhere around her third or fourth cocktail, even my karaoke-shy colleague Alfie ended up owning the mic.

More vibes

By 11pm, we were hyped up enough on music and cocktails to head to our last destination of the night: Nova, Singapore’s highest rooftop bar.

It was conveniently Wednesday, aka ladies’ night, which meant we got complimentary entry with two free drinks each.

Because we came in a group of five (plus one), we also got a complimentary bottle of champagne.

The rooftop bar was an expansive, open-air veranda arrayed with comfy couches and tables.

At the heart of the space was a DJ booth, nestled beneath a large, neon-lit star centrepiece.

Listen, I’m a house-party girl at heart. There’s nothing I like better than a homemade G&T with my friends in a cozy HDB flat.

But as I sipped my champagne and took in the sparkling city skyline, I decided I should probably do this more often.
